Pygmy cypress pine
Callitris oblonga
The Pygmy cypress is an Australian native. Due to extensive land clearing and competition from invasive species, it is considered vulnerable. A good choice for enthusiasts and conservationists alike who want to increase numbers of such a unique species.
Origin and climate
The pygmy cypress is endemic to Tasmania. It is only seen in remnant habitat today, growing on sandy creek beds and granitic soils. There are also two small subspecies populations in the northern and southern tablelands of NSW.
Growth
Height: Shrub to small tree reaching a maximum of around 3m, with intricate foliage forming fine branchlets.
Ideal Growth Conditions: neutral to acidic soil pH. Moist but well-drained soils, full sunlight or partial shade.
Attributes: Small round cones either singular or in clusters.
Tending and care
Slow growing, prefers cooler climates, sandy loam - loam clay soil, tolerates light frosts.
Uses: Ornamental for gardens, windbreak/hedge, christmas trees, natural forest, Timber.
