White Cypress (Callitris glaucophylla) - Potted trees
The White Cypress or ‘Cypress pine’, is an Australian native, growing in inland areas of most states of Australia. Although somewhat slow growing it is a popular and very hardy choice for ornamental gardens, timber, forests and parklands, well built for the harshest of Australian conditions, and the grey-green foliage and dark, fissured bark is quite attrtactive. The timber is highly prized for its rich colour, pleasant scent and termite resistance. The trees are extremely drought hardy and will grow on some of the poorest of soils.
These trees can grow in areas with as little as 250mm precipitation per year and are fire resistant when established. They are very adaptable to a range of soils though dislike wet feet and poorly drained soils. Ideal pH range is between 6 and 7.5. In richer soils and higher rainfall areas they grow very dense and more quickly to around 20m in height. The trees are also very frost tolerant down to around -8’C and can shrug off summer temperatures in excess of 45’C.
