Balsam fir (Abies balsamea)
Balsam fir (Abies balsamea)
Potted Balsam Fir
Tree Information
A popular cool climate tree with a lovely rich blue-green needle colour. Native to Eastern Canada and North-eastern parts of the USA. It is a very adaptable tree, preferring moist, acidic and well drained soils, but tolerating wet and temporarily waterlogged conditions. It grows best in cool climates with frosty or snowy winters but weill tolerate temperate climates where temperatures don’t go above 40’C in Summer. It is faster growing than its close relative the fraser fir and growing into a narrow conical shape. It has a distinctive and strong scent and the name derives from its use as an essential oil. This tree makes an elegant Christmas tree or landscape feature and is all round easier to grow than some of its relatives.
